What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by an individual person to establish and maintain control over their intimate partner.

PHYSICAL
ABUSE

There are various types of abuse that takes place between them.

Domestic violence occurs within all races, religions, age and economic groups.

Between 2 to 10 million women are victims of domestic violence each year. For every 1 case reported 10 to 20 go unreported.

Research shows nearly 90% of battering victims  are female and 10% are male.

The effects of this type of violence are devastating to the family, community and society as a whole,  Quality of life of a community is damaged when health and well being of its members and families are being destroyed.
Domestic violence is often passed from one generation to another as an acceptable way of life.  In about 50% of homes where there is spouse abuse, the children are also abused.  A boy raised in a violent home is likely to batter his female intimate partner as an adult.  A girl who witnesses her mother's abuse is likely to become a victim herself.  In either case, the children are being taught not to respect women or themselves, to hurt those they are suppose to love and to continue the cycle of violence.
